In today’s world, there is a constant increase in terror threats and activities. Whether we are in our homes, markets, workplaces, or any public places, we feel security & safety threats. Ill-minded people use vehicles parked in public places to conduct their terror activities and make people in a large number have wounds and deaths. Using a vehicle incident detection system or under-vehicle scanning system, you can make your parking space, workplace, etc. safe. Have a look at some basic points about this system:
What is an under-vehicle scanning system?
Under vehicle scanning systems have imaging systems that are installed at the roadway and facility access points, especially at secure facility centers. The system helps to detect threats such as bombs that could be hidden undeneath parts of a vehicle to damage the vehicle, or property, or spread insecurities among masses.
In the late 1980s, the Morfax (now a unit of the Chemring Group) and the UK Home Office developed this system under a joint program. The system used black and white images from scan cameras installed at certain places. With time, the system has gone several advancements with the inclusion of several different technologies such as:
- Database capabilities in 1994
- ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) in 1997
- Automatic change detection in 1999
- Colour imagery in 2005
- Integrated chemical detection in 2012
The under-vehicle scanning system can be installed on the road, portable (mobile), or attached to the surface of certain roads.
Other names used for under-vehicle scanning systems (UVSS)
The system has several other acronyms. Some of them are as follows:
- Under-vehicle inspection (UVI)
- Under-vehicle inspection systems (UVIS)
- Automated under-vehicle inspection systems (AUVIS)
- Mobile under-vehicle inspection systems (MUVIS)
- Under vehicle surveillance system (UVSS)
- Colour under vehicle surveillance system (CUVSS)
How does the under-vehicle scan system work?
The installed cameras click images/photos of the underneath parts of a vehicle as it arrives at the checkpoint or goes over it. After that, the imaging unit sends the clicked images/videos to the control room where all the information is displayed on the monitor. The control room is outside or far away from the checkpoint/imaging unit.
Based on its modules and features, the under-vehicle scanning system can store the clicked/captured information. As per needs, the admin or security personnel can access and monitor the stored information for a deep or closer inspection.
In the contemporary world, the UVSS can have integrated LPR (licence plate recognition) or ANPR (automated number plate recognition) modules that can help the admin to detect stolen vehicles or detect vehicle incidents.
