Earlier this day was celebrated only in foreign countries but now people in India also celebrate this day very well.
Father’s Day is celebrated on different days in countries around the world. In many countries including India, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Whereas in Spain and Portugal it is celebrated on 8 August. At the same time, in Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on 5 December.
History of Father’s Day:
It is believed that Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Several months earlier, on 6 December 1907, this special day was organized by Lagres Golden Clayton in honor of the 210 fathers who died in a mine accident in Monongah, West Virginia.
At the same time, according to another story related to it, the story behind celebrating Father’s Day is related to Sonora, daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. Sonora’s mother, who lived in Spokane, Washington, died while giving birth to her sixth child. Sonora raised her younger brothers along with her father. Seeing the way Sonora’s father used to take care of all the children, Sonora wanted to give respect to her father.
After hearing a Mother’s Day sermon by the bishop of Spokane’s Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909, Sonora felt that fathers should also be respected. To this end, Sonora contacted the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and asked them to recognize their father’s birthday, June 5, as Father’s Day to honor fathers around the world.
